Panoramas

On my travels I have taken a number of sequential photos which I stitch together to create panoramic images. Some of them have a narrow field of vision while others are a full 360 degrees. I have not created any full spherical panoramas yet, but will be experimenting with that soon.

I have a Nikon D3200 DSLR camera, and use the standard 18-55mm lens to take the individual photos. I try and take the photos with an aperture of  around f10 to keep everything in focus, but have to open it up when indoors or darker environments without a tripod, due to lack of light. I almost never have a spare tripod on me when I want to take some panoramic photos. This camera has an exposure / focus lock so I can take all the photos with the same exposure and focal point. This is useful for creating seemless panoramas.

Once the camera is setup, I just take a series of photos of a particular landscape, ensuring that there is approximately 10% overlap from one photo to the next.

To stitch the photos I use Hugin, which is free and easy to use. Done.

I found a free Flash panorama viewer from Open Pano, and have used this to display the panoramas.
